Linn County Animal Rescue

Linn County Animal Rescue is a multi-purpose, non-riding rescue facility. Our main objective is to focus on healing the severely abused and neglected animals that have come to us via the Sheriff's Department and Animal Control including horses, cows and sheep, and hospice dogs. We are also dedicated to helping community individuals with different disability issues.

Two of our board members specialize in supporting individuals with PTSD, I/D disabilities, and addiction recovery. We also have volunteers who work in both mental health support and direct support. Together we have created a program to encourage individuals to visit our sanctuary, which is secured on private property. Horses are extremely empathetic animals and can easily communicate with our guests to assist in the healing process. All of our animals suffer from PTSD, many have suffered horrific abuse at the hands of humans. It is easy for them to recognize similar trauma in others and bring them the peace and joy that we all deserve- watching them communicate is a unique form of therapy for everyone involved. Our horses have helped hundreds of individuals over the years. It is always a special treat to watch participant’s reactions when they realize the horses remember them as they are being greeted upon arrival. These can develop into lifelong bond bonds and are very special to everyone involved. For more information or to get involved, please visit our contact page.

We have been a 501(c)3 nonprofit since 2008; all donations we receive go directly to the animals and their care.  We are 100% volunteer run and do not receive any funding. We have teamed up with our friends at Muttbutts to raise awareness for our cause while making customers smile with unique merchandise for animal lovers. You can enjoy your purchases knowing that you are also helping care for animals who truly need your support.

MEET SCARLETT

Scarlett at the time of her rescue

Scarlett 8 months after her rescue.

Scarlett was seized in 2009 by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office Livestock Investigation Team. At the time, she had a Henneke Body Score of .05- a score of 1 on the Henneke scale is typically the lowest, indicating a horse is extremely emaciated, with NO body fat, and who are generally not expected to survive.

LCAR was called to pick her up and she was legally signed over to the Rescue. Her advanced age of 31 and neglected condition put all the odds against her recovery. With a precise re-feeding program, medical attention, hands-on care, and her own will to live, Scarlett beat all the odds and survived! Two years later, she was a healthy, beautiful 33-year-old who could be seen running across the fields, enjoying her second chance at life in a safe and loving environment, with other horses who survived the same way she did.

THIS IS WHY LCAR EXISTS!

At Linn County Animal Rescue, we provide healing support where abused, neglected, and starved horses can recover and get another chance at living a loving, healthy life. We also provide a life-long sanctuary–a forever home for horses like Scarlett to live out their lives.
